In science, students work in small groups or pairs to construct and share ideas. We explore simple equipment and tools to gather data and extend our senses. Students develop simple skills such as how to observe, measure using (nonstandard) units, use numbers, sort (using own rules) cut, connect, switch, turn on and off, pour, hold, tie, and hook. They begin to ask questions that they can answer with scientific knowledge combined with their own observations and simple predictions. Through the observation and manipulation of common objects students reflect on their similarities and differences. We record our observations in our Scientists' notebooks using simple sketches and labels which in turn leads to increasingly more detailed drawings and richer verbal descriptions through writing.
